Homemaker???

Someone asked me if I was a homemaker.

I have thought about this question all morning. It bugs me. What is it about the term, homemaker, that irritates me so much?

I like being at home. I'm happy, but being called a homemaker seems to just bring me to a halt. It makes me cringe.

I prefer to be called a stay at home mom. I'll also take the titles CEO and CFO of our family. I'll even take family chef, chauffeur, nurse, and (begrudgingly) maid. But please do not call me a homemaker. It is like fingernails on a chalkboard.

huh - I'm with you, for what it's worth, but I've known enough women who find the term "stay at home mom" offensive/sexist/patriarchal/repressive/whatever (no problem with the situation, just the term), and apparently "homemaker" is the new PC term. Don't like it much myself! (Although, as my own mother used to say, on her fifth errand of the day -- when does the staying at home part kick in?)
